Marcel Mai is an emerging Sydney-based cinematographer driven by a deep passion for visual storytelling and the power of the moving image. He is a recent graduate of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS), where he completed his Bachelor of Art in Screen Production (2023-2025). During his studies, he meticulously honed his craft, dedicating himself to mastering all facets of cinematography, from nuanced lighting to dynamic camera movement.
Marcel has already built a versatile and impressive portfolio marked by significant industry recognition. His talent for non-fiction storytelling is evident in his documentary work, with two of his projects, "Reel Equality" and "Living in Limbo," being selected for broadcast on SBS On Demand. His narrative short film "Crossroads" demonstrated his cinematic eye, earning a selection as a Quarter Finalist at the Australia Independent Film Festival. His work has also been consistently featured in key festivals, including official selections at both the Sydney Women's Film Festival and the Melbourne Women in Film Festival.
Beyond his festival success, Marcel has gained invaluable professional experience on large-scale productions, including the Netflix 2023 Practical Series in Vietnam. This experience provided him with practical, on-set insights in a high-pressure, professional environment. He has also demonstrated his versatility by shooting multi-episode podcast series for Emoi Studio, such as "Live to Tape" and "Hanh Ly," proving his ability to adapt his visual style to diverse and modern formats.
